Improvement of Constipation by a Small Amountof
Xylooligosaccharides Ingestion in Adult Women

Xylooligosaccharides (XO) were administered at 0.4g/day for 4 weeks to 40 healthy adult women. Stool frequency wassignificantly increased during the period of XO ingestion in theconstipated subjects who defecated 4 times or less in a week beforeXO ingestion. Fecal quantity, consistency and color of feces andfeeling after defecation were improved (P<0.05) by XO ingestionin the subjects whose self-judged scores were low before XOingestion, and the satisfying state was maintained for 2-4 weeksafter XO ingestion was completed. The occupancy of Bifidobacteriain total intestinal flora was significantly increased in the secondweek of XO ingestion period (P<0.05). This effect was maintainedduring the period of XO ingestion and returned to the originalstate after the termination.
