Inhaling or ingesting hydrogen (H2) gas ameliorates oxidative stress-induced damage in animal and human models, and molecular H2 reportedly protects against reactive oxygen species, such as hydroxyl radicals (・OH). We observed that after the ingestion of H2-rich water and H2 inhalation at the rate of approximately 1 μmol/min/m2 BSA, H2 was utilized throughout the human body. Based on the results, we theorized that if H2 scavenged ・OH in the body, one ・OH molecule would be produced for every 10,000 oxygen (O2) molecules during breathing at rest. We also found that ・OH is released from the skin on the palm of the hand and that inhaled H2 reversibly decreases ・OH signals from the human skin. These methods may be useful for in vivo luminacoid studies on the interactions between reactive oxygen species and H2 through colonic fermentation.
Key Words:molecular hydrogen, reactive oxygen species, hydroxyl radical, colonic fermentation, luminacoid
