This review described the defmition of pro-andprebiotics, and their functions and problems to be solved.Probiotics and prebiotics are functional Foods, which adjust thefunction and balance of intestinal microflora to be more beneficialand less risky to health. Probiotics in a viable form suppress themetabolism or population of harmful bacteria. Prebiotics areindigestible and fermentable oligosaccharides and polysaccharidesincluding dietary fibers that are stimulators to growth ofbeneficial intestinal bacteria and consequently suppress the growthor metabolism of harmful bacteria. Probiotics sometimes supply withthemselves the deficient or abnormal intestinal microflora thatappear during and after the chemotherapeutic treatment, and correctan abnormal balance of the microflora in premature infants andelderly persons. The intestinal microflora may be hypothesized toconsist of different bacteraial networks, which are not always inintact form. Probiotic bacteria supplement or activate theintestinal bacterial network with defects in respect of populationlevel or metabolic activity. In this context intestinal bacteriaother than bifidobacteria and lactic acid bacteria may be alsocandidates for probiotic bacteria. Prebiotics activate thebacterial metabolism and increase the population of the specificbacterial species to result in the satisfaction of the bacterialnetwork beneficial to health. Pro-and prebiotics will befurthermore anticipated in future in maintenance or improvement ofthe human life without risk or with risk to health, respectively.
