Clinical Research of Polydextrose on HabitualConstipation.

The clinical effects of polydextrose administeredat a daily dose of 7g for 10 days were examined in 92 patients withhabitual constipation taking a laxative daily or irregularly. Afterthe administration of polydextrose, 44(47.8%)of the 92 patientsnoted improvement in constipation. The frequency of defecationincreased in 37(56.1%)of 66 patients. The fecal proprietiesimproved 24(75.0%)of 32 patients having had hard stools. Theeffects of polydextrose was thus noted in 59(65.5%) of the 92patients in total as (1) improvement in constipation, (2) increasedfrequency of defecation, (3) improved stool consistency, (4)improvement in other bowel symptoms, or (5) reduced laxative doses,or two or more of those. These results indicated a clinical effectsof polydextrose for the treatment of habitual constipation.
