Analysis for “Food for Specified Health Uses”Currently Approved
and a Short History on FOSHU Regulatory System

 Food for Specified Health Uses (FOSHU) regulatorysystem was established in 1991 in Japan, and since 2001 FOSHU hasbeen categorized one of the Food with Health Claims (FHC) under thenew system. The numbers of currently approved FOSHU are 806 items(7th, Nov. 2008). They were analyzed in terms of thecurrent status and the transition during the recent decade from theview point of the labels of health claims and functionalcomponents. Thereafter, a short history on a couple of FOSHUregulatory system is introduced.
