A mixture of inulin and cheese whey liquid (MIW), was developed to effectively use the waste liquid of cheese whey from small-scale cheese making. In this study, we examined the effect of MIW on the intestinal environment and bowel movement. The effects of MIW on physical measurements, blood pressure, blood examinations, defecation, fecal properties, and intestinal microbiota were investigated in 20 healthy adult men and women (10 men and 10 women; mean BMI 22.3 ± 3.34 kg/m2) with mild constipation. The subjects were divided into two groups (placebo and MIW ingestion groups). Each subject in the MIW group was administered 30 g/day of MIW for 28 days after a non-intake period of 14 days. There were no clinical problems during the intake period in both groups. Although the fecal properties and intestinal microbiota were not significantly different in both groups during the intake period, the frequency of defecation increased significantly (p<0.05) in the MIW intake group compared with the placebo group. These results suggest that MIW improved the state of bowel movements in healthy adults with mild constipation.
